Knitting and Reading? Yes, Please!

July 13, 2014 by yarndancing Leave a Comment

I recently had the great pleasure of participating in the Moscow Library Yarn Bombing Project. Community members of all ages knitted or crocheted pieces that were then sewn on to structures inside and outside the library by staff and volunteers.  As an extra bonus, participants were entered into a drawing for one of three $25 gift certificates from The Yarn Underground.  The result is a gorgeous display of color and creativity!  New pieces are being added throughout the summer so stop by often to check them out (and a book or two as well!)

Below are photos I took (unless otherwise indicated) of some of the pieces on display (click on a photo to see a larger version).  You can also see more photos on the Latah County Library District’s Facebook page.

For the project, I knitted a famous quote by Jorge Luis Borges for one of the library benches. On the right is Chris Sokol, Interim Director for the Latah County Library District. (Photo taken by LCLD Board Chair, Mary McGregor)

I also covered the posts on either side of the library book drop. It really helped that Jackie Carter, the project’s awesome organizer, provided participants with a detailed list of all the possible objects that could be decorated and their dimensions.

Unfortunately, I don’t know who made the following pieces but I sure admire their talent and creativity!

Libraries have a very special place in my heart.  I always had my nose in a book as a kid and made frequent visits to my hometown library (a unique and historic building in northern Manitoba).  I was thrilled when I got the chance to work there as a teenager.  And now I get to be part of another special library which has a great selection of books, media and programs for readers of all ages.

Support your local library! 🙂
